Shobanjo

A remarkable addition to Dr. Biodun Shobanjo’s cap was another feather to his already colorful plumage at the 51st convocation ceremony of the University of Lagos (Unilag), where he was conferred with an Honorary Doctorate Degree of Doctor of Letters (D.Litt) on Thursday, July 8, 2021. The Chancellor of the university, Alhaji (Dr.) Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai El-Kanemi, CFR, stated that, “the governing council of the University of Lagos has approved the conferral of an honorary degree of Doctor of Letters (D.Litt) Honoris Causa of the University on you at the 51st Convocation Ceremony today.” Further on in his speech, the Chancellor acknowledged that the decision to honor the Chairman of Troyka group by the university was an easy one to make because of his unparalleled contribution to the industry and the university.

In the presence of other distinguished personalities and honorees, an elated Shobanjo accepted the conferred doctorate degree in his usual grace and style. He thanked the university, particularly, the governing council for finding him worthy of the award. He said, “I cannot express to this university how grateful I am for this incredible honor that has been bestowed upon me.” He congratulated the graduating class, and inspired them with his words of wisdom, “Knowledge alone is not enough. Except you are very passionate about what you do, very visionary, and can discover new grounds, knowledge will not be able to make you impact the society,” Still stressing on the importance of aligning education with life lessons and making impact, he said, “Irrespective of all the years spent in the university, you have to be able to bring it to bear on society. Textbook knowledge would not suffice, without impacting on people and society daily, because what society will remember us for is what we have been able to make a difference at.” The Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Oluwatoyin T, Ogundipe (FAS), commended his wife, Joyce Shobanjo, and his employees, past and present for contributing to his personal success.
